Flash

The Violin 1010 memory appliance provides an ideal platform for provisioning Flash memory as a large-scale Tier-Ø storage infrastructure.

Violin Flash technology significantly improves the economics and performance metrics of Flash storage systems for the data center:

Density and Power Efficiency: A single Violin 1010 supports 4TB of Flash capacity in a 2U appliance. It consumes 80% less space and power than similar systems.

Cost per Useable GByte: In addition to significantly increasing density, Violin integrates hot-swappable RAID and doubles the useable capacity compared with enterprise SSD solutions. The total cost of enterprise-grade Flash storage is lowered by more than 50%.

Write IOPS: Violin’s Flash technology enables over 200K sustained random Write IOPS (4K block), more than twenty times greater than Fiber Channel or PCIe SSDs.

Latency: Violin’s RAID dramatically reduces latency under load by more than 80%, eliminating the multi-millisecond variability seen in current SSDs.

Wear: The Violin 1010 with 4TB SLC Flash can sustain continuous 100K Write IOPS over its projected 10 year life, double the industry standard.  Unlike SSDs, all workloads are supported without wear being a concern to the end-user.

The Violin 1010 with Flash has commened trials and the performance of the system has been significantly better than other Flash storage systems with over 200K Sustained Write IOPS. Some test results from the initial trials are included in the Flash Configuration and Performance Brief  »

The Violin 1010 supports 32 or 64GB of SLC Flash VIMMs with a maximum capacity of 4 TByte. Systems start at 320 GByte.

Violin 1010 with Flash is the industry’s highest performing persistent storage system:

  • READ IOPS: 300K random or sequential READ IOPS — 1000 times faster than hard drives.
  • WRITE IOPS: 200K random or sequential SUSTAINED WRITE IOPS — about 1000 times faster than hard drives and more than 20 times faster than most Flash SSDs.
  • Latency: 70-300 microseconds latency for large (128K) or small (4K) blocks under very high write loads -– over 50 times faster than traditional disk storage and 4 times faster than Flash SSDs.

Jim Handy – Objective Analysis

“Flash memory is starting to make some serious inroads into the data center, but many of today's solutions are hampered by a lack of understanding about how to match flash's strengths and weaknesses to the needs of the system.  Violin's fresh approach to improving both read and write latency, and their unique RAID technology, marry the needs of the system to all that flash has to offer.”
